Takis was an inventor of new ways of artistic expression based on the functional use of natural laws: he created sculptures consisting of elementary material means, a magnet and a needle attracted by the magnet and standing in the air thanks to a thread, the well-known "Telemagnetic" sculptures, which were the main and characteristic core of his artistic expression, and then he introduced "Telephoto". In this series, cathode-ray mercury tubes were combined with electromagnets, whose operation disturbs the intensity of light. The introduction of sound into his works, and in particular music, constitutes another essential element of his work, as the concept of his musical sculptures is based on the simple idea of using magnetic waves caused by electricity as a source to trigger repetitive musical sounds. His work, over some forty years, has sought to explore the physical function of language as a form of labour. He breaks down the boundaries between sculpture and music with a body of work whose reading is linked to the identification they establish between function as a structured whole and its morphological, visual and acoustic aspects.
