MODERN UNNGIFIED OBJECT

Unidentified lead alloy object of uncertain date. The object is circular in plan with moulded decoration on the front and a plain back. There is a circular hole through the centre of the disc, now plugged with sediment. The design on the front takes the form of a bird, possibly a turkey, dodo or peacock, within a circular border. The head to the left, feet to the bottom and the tail to the right, touch the border. The edge of the disc has a slightly lipped appearance. The object has a dark grey patination with a lighter, shinier appearance across recent damage points, such as across the head of the bird and on the reverse.It measures 35.2mm in diameter, 7.6mm and weighs 57.29g. It is possible that this object was an furniture fitting or escutcheon, possibly a drawer handle. It is difficult to date this object, however if the design is indeed a turkey, it is likely to date to the Post Medieval to Modern times as the turkey was introduced in Britain in the mid 16th century.
