The European lake turtle (Emys orbicularis) inhabits the largest of Europe, except Belgium, the Netherlands and western Germany, as well as the northern half of France. In Africa, the lake turtle presents restricted areas in Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria. The species is also found in the Middle East, southern Russia and around the Caspian Sea. Isolated populations are found in the Belarus-Letonia-Russia border area and in the extreme east of Turkey, close to the border with Iran. The colorite is represented by small yellow or golden spots on the dark background of carapace and skin of adults and juveniles. Some populations may be completely dark, or with a small number of yellow spots. The lake turtle has an omnivore diet, consuming both animal and vegetable matter, represented by aquatic plants and terrestrial plants in the vicinity of the waters. The laying of the tip takes place in the second half of the day, when the sun is no longer as strong and on the nights with higher temperatures.
