POST MEDIEVAL LOCK

Unidentified hollow copper-alloy object, possibly a weight. It is circular, 13.5 mm in diameter, and 5.5 mm thick. One of the circular faces is closed with a key-hole-shaped cut-out consisting of a central circular perforation (5 mm diameter) with a small rectangular extension to one side, the base of which continues as a groove to the other face. The other circular face is open. The sides are very slightly waisted, and are decorated with four stamped letters each separated by a stamped fleur-de-lis. The letters (W, A, Y and O) are written longitudinally around the circumference, and are read with the open face to the left and the 'keyhole' face to the right. They are seriffed and look 16th- or 17th-century. The weight (4.43g, 0.156 oz, 0.1425 troy oz, 2.85 dwt, 68.4 grains) is not immediately recognisable as a fraction of any of the English post-medieval systems, and the letters cannot be interpreted. It looks as though it may be a weight that could be slid along a steelyard arm, but no parallels have been found and it may not be English.Update: this object can now be recognised as one of the discs from a combination lock.
