UNKNOWN UNNGIFIED OBJECT

An unidentified heavy solid cast lead alloy object, perhaps a weight, of unknown date. It is a very dense object which is "D" shaped in plan and triangular in cross-section. The front face is slightly depressed in the centre in a D shape, and the reverse is convex. The material is not a soft type of lead, but is very heavy and hard showing. The object has a very grey patina, and an unidentifiable small raised area within the inner "D", possibly a figure. The reverse is domed evenly across the width with "casting" depression marks all across.The possible weight is 46.8mm long, 27.5mm wide is 7.8mm thick and weighs 47.2g.The FLO adds: the mass of 47.2g is close to an eigth of a Troy pound (46.6g), so the object could be an unofficial weight dating from AD 1350 onwards, but the shape and style is unusual for a weight. The triangular cross-section and D shape could suggest that the object was cast in a spoon or vessel, and is perhaps the left over solidified lead alloy left after casting. However, the D shaped rim on the flat face makes this less likely.
